CHAS Accredited Building Contractors
Health and Safety has been a big issue for the construction industry for many years and although things have improved massively in recent years it’s still a major problem for the industry.
Each year in the construction sector, around….
Construction Health & Safety Scheme – CHAS
In 1997, a group of experienced Health & Safety (H&S) professionals set out to improve the situation by designing a structured scheme to improve H&S standards across the industry; it was called CHAS which is short for “The Contractors Health & Safety Assessment Scheme”.
Partnering with the “Association of London Government” which represents London’s 33 local authorities, CHAS was key in developing the core criteria which made up the approved code of practice which was later recognised as Construction, Design and Management 2015 (CDM 2015) and later became a founding member of the Safety Scheme in Procurement or SSIP for short. Recognised as an authority on health & safety, CHAS also established itself as a “trusted advisor” on health and safety compliance setting industry benchmarks that are easy to use.
The health and safety legislation was created to achieve the following aims:
- To simplify health and safety contractor assessment by standardising requirements.
- To allow companies to avoid undergoing health and safety assessments for every job.
Where construction work is to be carried out by an employer, whether a company or government department, it should carry out its own due diligence on a contractor to ensure they are:
- Financial secure
- Have a well-trained work force with proof of training
- Adhere to CDM 2015
- Meet the Health & Safety obligation laid out in the Health & Safety at Works Act 1974
- Appointing a CHAS Certified Contractor
CHAS Certified Building Contractors Based in Birmingham.
As a CHAS certified contractor, we are assessed on an annual basis with the Accreditation Certificate being valid for a period of 12 months from the last compliant assessment.
The process is both stringent and robust and has been designed to assist you the buyer in making informed decisions particularly in the area of health & safety competence assessment.
As a prospective client, appointing a CHAS member to your nominated tender list can save hours of sifting through reams of questionnaires from hopeful but possibly non-compliant contractors. Appointing a company with CHAS accreditation you cast rest assured that many of your requirements will already have been adhered to, certainly in terms of health & safety.
